It looked likely towards the end of 2019 that Michigan would join the growing number of states that have passed bills, but a last-minute change of heart from then-governor Rick Snyder postponed that.

Luckily the new governor, Gretchen Whitmer, has signed bipartisan legislation that allows sports betting and online gambling in Michigan. After dramatic events, delays and legislative snags pushed back timelines, the Governor finally had a bill ready to sign on her desk by January 2021.

Now, you can start playing Michigan online casinos today with some of the biggest names in online betting, including BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, and more– here’s all the information you need to get started.

Yes! Michigan has fully pushed forward legislation for online casinos, both on mobile devices and desktop computers.

On January 22nd, 2021, Whitmer’s signed online sports betting legislation took effect, but it was a hard road to legal bets.

Senator Mike Kowall spent a number of years jockeying for a legal sports betting framework, securing approval by the Michigan Senate and House. However, in a disappointing blow, one of the final decisions Snyder made as Governor was to veto the bill.

But the new governor, Gretchen Whitmer, was brought the bill again, this time with greater success.

Online gaming has technically been allowed in Michigan since 2014 when the MI Lottery was introduced. It was just a matter of time before the state joined New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Nevada in making online gambling legal.

Similar legislation is sweeping the nation, as states across the Union attempt to snag their piece of the betting pie. Michigan’s delays in moving forward were in part due to a claim that Michigan was waiting to see how online betting works in those states before making its final decision.

Snyder left the post and was succeeded by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who was a bit more amenable to the practice of online casino gambling. Delays and legislative reviews pushed back the deadlines for online casinos, which didn’t end up coming to fruition in 2020 at all.

Luckily though, by 2021 all the “ducks were in a row”, so to speak, and the 22nd of January saw the release of the first fully-fledged MI legal online casinos. More are going live on a regular basis, so make sure to check with your preferred online casino provider to see if they’ve started offering their services to folks in Michigan.

This means that poker, blackjack and other popular casino games can be played legally at land-based casinos and online.

There are a great number of land-based outlets throughout the State. Many of these are located in Michigan’s largest city, Detroit. We’d expect that most of the casinos here will launch online operations since legislation has passed.

Registering for Online Casinos in MI

Registration with online casinos in Michigan is a straightforward and easy process. You don’t even have to physically be in a casino to sign up– just download your preferred app or visit your online casino’s website to create an account and start playing for real money.

Hit the Register or Sign Up button when you go to the gaming site. You will then be presented with a registration form.

This form will ask you to enter your personal information and contact info. With other online casinos, they’ve asked customers to provide their full name, address, mobile phone number, and email address. The same is true for Michigan online casinos, who have to verify your identity to make sure everything is legal and kosher.

An important note: you do not have to be a resident of Michigan to use these casino apps and websites, but you must be physically located in Michigan, of legal gambling age, and have an account in good standing if you want to bet while in MI.

A Michigan online casino will need to know you meet the minimum age requirement. Because of this, you’ll have to provide your date of birth and your SSN when signing up with a trustworthy online casino. As long as the casino is registered with the Michigan Gaming Control Board, you can be sure that your information is safe, so go ahead.

Lastly, all online casinos in the US require their users to verify their location while wagering. You can access your account, access banking features, and more from anywhere with an internet connection, but you can only wager for real money while physically in the state.

To verify your location when wagering, sites will either use a geolocation plugin downloaded and enabled on your browser, or through your smartphone’s location services.

If any information is found to be false, your account could be suspended. Your mobile number and email address will be used for communication purposes too.

In your Michigan legal online casino sign up form, you might also have the option to enter a promo code. A valid promo code could help you earn a welcome bonus or be needed to qualify for a new customer bonus!

Thankfully, after much deliberation, online casinos are ready and raring to go in the Wolverine State. It was very touch-and-go at the end of 2019, and hopes were dashed as Snyder vetoed the existing betting legislation. However, 2020 was a complex year with blisteringly-fast changes in legal landscapes, and new-Governor Gretchen Whitmer was able to get online casinos up and running in the 22nd year of the new millennium.

It’s nice to finally say that online casino gambling is alive and well in the state of Michigan.
