Online betting and sports betting, in particular, have been a hot topic across the United States. Is it legal to bet on sports in Michigan? Let’s find out.

Sports Betting Laws Need To Pass First

Before any MI sportsbooks can open, legislation needs to be passed first. It certainly looked like Michigan online sportsbooks would become a reality at the end of last year.

But the then governor, Rick Snyder, surprised many when he vetoed the bill that would legalize sports betting, and now the issue has come to somewhat of a standstill. So, for the time being, MI sports betting is still illegal. It is possible to bet on horse racing and greyhound racing though.

There are a number of gambling sites that allow Michigan residents to bet on horses and greyhounds, BetAmerica and TVG among them.

Michigan online betting is technically legal, which adds to the confusion surrounding the vetoing of the bill. The Michigan Lottery was introduced in 2014, and Fantasy Sports contests are also available.

Any State in the US can approve online and sports betting, so long as the regulation doesn’t break any Federal law. New Jersey won their case at the Supreme Court in 2018 and became one of the first to pass legislation on online betting. Now Sports Betting in New Jersey is thriving in the Garden State and is generating a lot of revenue with protected bettors by licenced bookmakers. Other states have joined in legalizing online betting, with the possibility of sports betting being added in the near future.

For now, Michigan remains as one of the numbers of US states still deliberating possible legislation. If MI sportsbook does get introduced, whether as retail or Michigan online sportsbooks, this could open up the opportunity to bet on a number of popular sports.

Across other parts of the world, particularly in the United Kingdom and Europe, betting on soccer, basketball, football, and tennis is incredibly popular. The thought is that its popularity will spread to the United States if, of course, sports betting laws are passed.

Those of you who have been following this issue closely will know that it’s more likely online sports betting will be legalized before retail outlets. The House Bill 4926 does state that any organization can apply for a sports betting license.

This means that one of Michigan’s many land-based casinos could apply for a license to allow sports betting on the premises. We’ll look at this in more detail shortly. Legislation for allowing gambling online and sports betting was first brought in 2015.

It does appear that Michigan is getting closer to approving the legalization of sports betting. We’ll have to wait and see if new Governor Gretchen Whitmer finally signs off on the Bill or requests further changes.

In-Person Wagering Versus Online Betting

To the Bill itself. HB 4926 proposed to allow sports betting and online gambling throughout the state of Michigan. For in-person wagering, this could mean a number of things.

Land-based casinos would be allowed to apply for a sports betting license. This would be the case for both tribal and commercial casinos. So how would it work?

Casinos could open up their own Sportsbooks, offering an online option too. Or, established bookmakers could look to move into the area, either by opening a retail space in a casino or on the high street.

It could also mean that established bookmakers would accept residents of Michigan to sign up or introduce a Michigan-only Sportsbook. Now to potential Michigan online sportsbooks. Land-based casinos could offer an online version of their games, adding a Sportsbook too.

Or, like with retail, established bookies could look to creating a Michigan-only site, or allow Michigan residents to join up with their current offerings.

For the time being, both online sportsbook betting and in-person betting on sportsbook is not allowed. It’s possible for Michigan residents to bet on sports online, but any website that accepts customers are more than likely unregistered and unregulated.

This can lead to trouble. It’s also one of the reasons why the legislation was proposed in the first place.

If residents can bet online, however illegally, wouldn’t it be safer to put into place regulations? This is one of the arguments for the bill to be passed.

How To Register At Online Sportsbooks

Right now, it’s illegal for residents of Michigan to become members of any online Sportsbook.

This is due to change at some point in 2019, though, so let’s take a look at how you can register a Michigan online sportsbook account. We expect the sign-up process to be similar to those requested by other States.

First up, you will need to enter your personal information, including full name, address, date of birth, email address and mobile number. This is done to ensure you are who you say you are: in other words, you’re a Michigan resident old enough to bet.

The age for casino betting is 21 in Michigan, with the pari-mutuel betting age set at 18. It’s expected any MI Sportsbook would request you are at least 21 years old in order to sign.

The need for your full address is pretty self-explanatory – to ensure you’re a resident of the State. Your email and mobile number will be used for communication purposes, so it’s important you enter a valid address and phone number.

To be exact, it’s important that all the information you input at the registration stage is accurate. If you’re found to be in breach of any of the Michigan online sportsbook terms and conditions, your betting account will be suspended.

There may also be a number of welcome offers and customer bonuses available when you sign up. Most registration forms will come with a space to enter a promo code. Again, it’s key to read all the t’s and c’s of each offer available before you confirm your account.

It’s illegal to bet on sportsbook anywhere in New Jersey, but as we’ve seen above, even when regulations are put in place there are still a number of requirements you will have to adhere to.

When legislation does pass, there will be a huge amount of scrutiny placed on the online betting scene. This means that gambling organizations will need to keep to the regulations firmly.

They’ll be keen to ensure that any sign up to an online sportsbook abides by the rules. Make sure when you sign up to the sportsbook of your choice, you provide accurate and valid info.

After that, you can enjoy what MI sportsbooks have to offer!
